The reason this is “Day Three AM” is because of the intent to write a piece of story on my morning work commute, and another on my afternoon home commute. The NaNoWriMo web site is is blocked at work, so I cannot update my word count there until I’m home.
A little under 2,000 words, this chapter is noticeably shorter than the first. This is in part because there was no need to introduce transforming into a magical kid. Actually, these chapters are very short, no matter what. The idea is that after November, I may drop some of these chapters, I may add some new ones, and I’ll rework the remaining ones. These chapters are very episodic in nature, and will allow me to get to know the characters better.
Right now, Samuel’s dialogue is too mature. There’s a reason for him to be mature for his age, but he sounds more like a teenager guiding a child, rather than a child himself. These one-shot stories will give me a chance to better individualize characters, and while providing skeletons of chapters. I can flesh them out after November.
Chapter Themes
The first chapter dealt with a nightmare of falling as a building collapses. The next chapter deals with the fear of being chased by a large and powerful wild animal. The following chapter, and the chapter after that will also deal with the nightmares children have. Eventually I want to move away from childrens’ nightmares, but for the time being these will help me get to know Clover and Shamrock better.
NaNoWriMo Goals
Another 1,902 words have been written. This brings the total to 4,908. With a goal of 2,500 words per day, this becomes 1,250 words per commute, putting me over my commute goal by 652, and under my day goal by 598. This means all I need to write during my commute home today will be 598, but I’ll still aim for at least a chapter of 1,250 words.
